PENANG ISLAND Introduction

Penang Bridge
The Penang Bridge is a 13.5 km long bridge stretching from mainland to Penang Island. This is one of many architectural wonders in Malaysia as it is the longest bridge in Asia and 5th largest in the world. The bridge offers a beautiful view of the open sea, ships and sprawling coastline
   
The Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge
Popularly known as Penang Second Bridge is a dual carriageway toll bridge in Penang. It is the second bridge to link the island to the mainland after the first Penang Bridge. It connects Bandar Cassia (Batu Kawan) in Seberang Perai with Batu Maung on Penang Island. The total length of the bridge is 24km.
   
Penang Ferry
Before the bridge was build, people depended on ferry service to cross the Penang Straits. Nowadays, the ferry service remains very popular for those who prefer a more economical way of transport.

Fort Cornwallis
The fort was built on the site of Francis Light's historical landing in 1786 as a defense against the French, Kedah and pirated. Today, an open-air amphitheater, a history gallery and a souvenir centre occupies the interior.

Khoo Kongsi
Khoo Kongsi is an impressive clan house built by the forefathers of the khoo family who emigrate from South China. The building features a magnificent hall embellished with intricate carvings and richly ornamented beans fo the finest wood Opening hours: Monday to Friday 9.00am to 5.00pm, Saturday 9.00am to 1.00pm Permission to enter must be obtained from the Kongsi office.
 
 
 
Kek Lok Si Temple
Kek Lok si Temple is one of the finest Buddhist temples in South East Asia. Built in tiers, the temple culminates with the beautifully crafted "Pagoda of Ten Thousand Buddhas". The latest additions to the temple include the reconstruction of the 30.2 bronze Kuan Yin statue. During the Chinese Lunar New Year, the entire Kek Lok Si Temple is strung with ten of thousands of lanterns representing donations by devotees. When lit up in the evening, the temple is transformed into a fairyland of lights

Penang Hill
Malaysia's first hill station, Penang Hill is 830 metres (2730ft) above sea level, visitors can ascend to the top by either hiking up or by travelling in the funicular railway which has been operational since 1922 Apart from the cold refreshing climate, visitors can enjoy a spectacular 180° view of Georgetown from the SkyWalk and SkyDeck. At the top of the hill, you'll also find The Habitat, Monkey Cup Garden, Owl Museum, Restaurants, Penang Hill Kacang Putih and the old Bellevue hotel.

Penang Famed Beaches
Penang's northern shoreline is famous for its beautiful beaches of golden sand and deep blue seas. The beaches at Tanjung Bungah, Batu Ferringhi and Teluk Bahang offer expansive stretches of glittering sand interspersed with secluded coves within the shelter of gigantic rocks. It is along this famous coastline that resorts of international standard have sprouted up, offering a host of water-based recreational facilities.
 
 
 
 
 
Snake Temple
Built in 1850 and dedicated to the deity, Chor Soo Kong, the temple is located 3.2km from the Penang International Airport. It is a sanctuary for pit-vipers said to be the 'servants' of the deity. These venomous snakes, seen coiled round the pillars, beams and potted plants within the temple are believed to be rendered harmless by the smoke of the burning incense. Up till today snakes are still found in the temple, although in slightly lesser numbers than before.

Penang Museum and Art Gallery
Built in 1821, the Museum houses a fine collection of old photographs, maps, charts and other historical relics. Other exhibits include Malay daggers (Keris), Chinese furniture, embroidery and paintings of old Penang.The Art Gallery on the first floor displays the works of local artists and is the venue for special exhibitions. The statue of Francis Light graces the grounds in front of the building.
Opening hours: Daily from 9.00am - 5.00pm . Fridays from 9.00am - 12.15pm & 2.45pm - 5.00pm Admission fee: RM1.00 per person.
 
 
 
Cheong FattTze Mansion
A stately Chinese-type dwelling house representing 18th and 19th century Chinese architecture. The interior features beautiful bedrooms, libraries, ceremonial halls, heavy wooden doors, courtyards and gardens. The mansion houses a rare porcelain collection, sculptures, carvings, tapestries, embroideries and antiques. Permission to enter must be obtained from the owners. Across the road are five blue shophouses which were formerly the servants' quarters attached to the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion. Tours of the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion are offered at 11.00am on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
 
 
 
 
 
Penang Botanical Garden
The Penang Botanical Garden is an oasis of peace and tranquility amidst lush green surroundings, tropical plants and the vibrant colors of Penang’s flora. The 30-hectare garden also features a waterfall. Created in 1884 by the British, it was meant as a tribute of Charles Curtis, its first superintendent who collected botanical specimens from the surrounding hills which have since become significant samples in the world’s major herbariums. The gardens are also well-known for their Rhesus monkeys.

Entopia
Entopia, previously known as The Penang Butterfly Farm, is the first tropical butterfly farm ever set up in the world. Within Entopia lies two worlds; The Natureland living outdoor gardens and The Cocoon indoor discovery centre. Over 150 species of fauna and more than 200 species of flora are being showcased throughout Entopia’s entire exhibition.

Firefly Watching
The beauty of hundreds of fireflies twinkling along the mangrove forest is breathtaking. Fireflies watching at Sungai Kerian have also been lauded by many visitors as a ‘must visit’ tourist attraction.
